Doreikan
I guess that not so many of 郡上/Gujo local people have visited 土鈴館/Dorei-kan( http://www.nihondorei.com/ )in Shirotori.

This museum is not so big, but its number of 土鈴/dorei, an earthenware bell, is 16,000!

So it was recognized by Guinness as the No.1 土鈴/dorei  museum in the world this year.

↑  (ALTs in Gujo and I visited there last month)

When we visited there, 遠山さん/Toyama san was the guide for us.

He is the collector of all items there, and told us a lot about how interesting his collection is.

Actually he has been traveling all through Japan to collect those 土鈴/dorei.

By the way he says that he didn't see any 土鈴/dorei in some European countries he traveled before.

Maybe it is true.

I also have no experience to see them in Europe.

I saw some cowbells, but all of them are made of metal.

I think that I also have not seen any 土鈴/dorei in Asian countries.

It means 土鈴/dorei is a very Japanese item, and that's very interesting.

We can say that 土鈴館/Dorei-kan is one of very interesting places to visit in Gujo!

                                    ◇

My daughter school held a 運動会/sports day on 19 September 2011.

She was a member of the red team and worked very hard.

It was so exciting! ↓

The Yoshida river runs just behind her school.
I saw an old man who was fishing in the river on my way home after the undo-kai/sports day.

Autumn is here.

夜行バスで / take a night bus
Our Canadian friend who lives in Tokyo took a night bus (from Tokyo) and arrived in Gujo Hachiman yesterday morning.

And as soon as he arrived at my home, my husband took him to Hiyoshi-jinja shrine right away!

We did this because we wanted to him to see the "巫女/ miko" dance which was performed by 4 girls (including our daughter) on that morning.

And he was able to somehow get there on time.

He had work on Friday night in Tokyo so the night bus was the only choice for him.

Thanks a lot Steve!

**This is Steve typing!  and Your Welcome!

                                   ◇

          .

Because we could make the dance not only one chance but twice.

Between the dances the girls got a nice refreshment!

Yes! カキ氷 / shaved ice with flavored syrup poured over it.

                ◇

Their dance was wonderful.

My French friends living in Gifu city visited Gujo Hachiman the other day.

We took a walk by the lovely riverside.

                              ◇

They changed from their clothes into 浴衣(yukata, a summer cotton kimono) at my place and went to the Gujo-odori dance festival and practiced a lot.

They looked great!

Tempura cooking
My friend is going to spend her summer vacation with her family and friends in her hometown.

She wants to cook tempura for them.

So we made a practice before her leaving Gujo Hachiman.

What kind of tempura do you like?

We made なす/nasu:eggplant, まいたけ/maitake: mushroom, かきあげ/ kakiage: mixture of vegetables and other ingredients, こしあぶら/koshiabura: edible wild plant and ピーマン/piman: sweet green pepper.

They were all delicious!

I hope she will find nice item to cook tempura in her hometown.

I think that any vegetable or seafood is OK to cook tempura if you like it.

Do you have any special recipe of delicious tempura

which is not so common?

She also practiced how to make たまご焼き/tamago yaki for her husband.

She did very well!

                                      ◇

It is lovely today, perfect for hiking!

My daughter prepared her 弁当(べんとう)/bento, a packed lunch, and the tea bottle this morning.

She had been so exited about the hiking plan with her friend last a few days,
so she was very happy when she found it is fine today.

They are walking to the Gujo-Hachiman jo castle now.

They will walk a lot around Gujo-Hachiman all day.

Japan is very safe country, especially rural area like Gujo.

Children can't walk around by themselves in some cities even in developed countries.

Parents need to take their children to schools every day in those places because of unsafe.

I sometimes think about this and appreciate it.

I hope she will see our acquaintances and have a nice chat with them.

Gujo-Hachiman is such a lovely small town still preserves the  "community".

from my garden
Look at the beautiful pink color!

This tulip is from my tiny garden.

The branch is also from the garden,  and it is やまぼうし/yamaboushi
a kind of dogwood.

Spring is here in this 生け花.

This is a box of SAKE.
There are 2 bottles of SAKE in it.

They were offered to Atago shrine which is the nearest one from my house on New Year's Eve last year.

When we offer something to Gods at the Shinto shrines, usually we put a special designed paper on it.
So this box also has the paper.

This paper has two words.
The top one is 御神酒/Omiki, and the other one is my husband's name.

We deliver 御神酒/Omiki every  Obon and New Year Eve when the Shinto shrine holds the yearly rites.

I don't think we are pious Shintoists.
It's not easy to tell what Shintoism is.
One thing I can say about it is that
its fundamental idea is based on the nature itself.
I mean the nature is, for example, very old trees and symbolic rocks and/or something like that you can find each area in Japan.
If you can understand that they keep us something in awe, you will realize what Shintoism is..
