MSI therefore sticks with a very common configuration for the unit I'm testing, which includes an Intel Core i7-8550U, an Nvidia GeForce MX150 dedicated chip, a 512GB M.2 SATA SSD, and 16GB of memory. The U-series Intel Core processors have low power-draw requirements, run at low base clock speeds (1.8GHz for the Core i7-8550U), and generate little heat in order to fit into extremely small spaces. That means the U-series Core i7 in the PS42 is less powerful than a Core i7 that you might find in one of the company's gaming laptops. Still, it's more than powerful enough to handle everyday tasks such as word processing, web browsing, and videoconferencing.

The best evidence of the PS42's everyday capabilities is our PCMark 8 benchmark test, which offers a proprietary score based on simulated versions of these activities. The PS42 scored an excellent 3,416 on this test. The fact that it is 100 points lower than both the Lenovo IdeaPad 720s$999.99 at Lenovo and the HP Spectre 13 doesn't matter in the real world; I experienced no sluggishness during several days of casual browsing in Google Chrome and typing in Microsoft Word. The Razer Blade Stealth and Huawei MateBook X Pro's lower scores on the PCMark 8 benchmark are due in part to these laptops' higher-resolution displays. Pushing more pixels is taxing on the CPU, especially when it's coupled with an integrated graphics processor like the one in the Blade Stealth$1,499.99 at Amazon.

While you can order a cheaper PS42 with Intel integrated graphics, the discrete Nvidia chip with 2GB of dedicated memory in the version I tested makes a huge difference when it comes to gaming performance. The PS42 far outpaces every machine shown on the chart with Intel's integrated graphics chip on both our synthetic 3DMark gaming tests and our Heaven and Valley gaming frame-rate simulations. With frame rates hovering around 60 frames per second (fps) on the Heaven and Valley tests at medium quality settings, you might be able to enjoy graphics-intensive games at lower quality settings, which is all but impossible with the sub-30fps numbers that the HP, Lenovo, and Razer put up.Be warned, though: the MX150 is not a substitute for a high-end graphics card from Nvidia's GeForce GTX series. True to its roots, MSI said that is exploring the possibility of adding a GTX 1050 Max-Q GPU to the PS42, but that version isn't on sale yet.

Nor does the MX150 offer better performance on specialized tasks like editing photos or rendering video. On our Handbrake and Photoshop CS6 tests, which involve exporting a short HD video into a smartphone-friendly format and applying a series of filters to a test image, the PS42 performed almost exactly the same as its competitors (1 minute and 27 seconds for Handbrake, 3:04 for Photoshop).Battery life is also average for a premium ultraportable, though at 10 hours and 26 minutes on our battery rundown test, it's a bit on the low side. The Spectre 13 clocked in at more than 12 hours, and the MacBook Pro, renowned for its longevity away from an outlet, lasted for more than 16 hours.

The Dell XPS 13 is conspicuously absent from the charts above because the most recent version we tested, which received an Editors' Choice award, is significantly more expensive than $1,299.An ultraportable change of pace from a company that made its name in the gaming PC business, the PS42 is a solid first shot. It offers mid-level gaming performance in a very slim package, but it suffers from a boring design and a tiny touchpad, and a few other deficiencies. It's a worthy contender if you're an MSI loyalist looking for a laptop to tote around while your gaming rig remains safely at home. It's also an okay choice if you just want a thin-and-light machine with a good keyboard, don't care about touch screens or 4K, and can live with a tiny touchpad. Otherwise, the Dell XPS 13$999.99 at Dell offers more customization and better looks than the PS42 does, and so remains our Editors' Choice.

If you've updated to Windows 10 Fall Creators Update, then you've got a new tool to help extend your laptop's running time. I'll cover this new tool along with some tried-and-true battery-saving tips.Powering all of those pixels in the display is the single greatest drain on battery resources. The first item to check when you are experiencing troublingly short battery life is your display brightness. If you've got it turned up all the way or near the max, then lower the brightness; you might also find it a more comfortable computing experience to your eyes.

Your laptop likely has two Function keys mapped to display brightness. If not, you can find a brightness slider by going to Settings > System > Display. You'll also find a slider for display brightness in the Windows Mobility Center, which is buried in the Control Panel; the easiest way to find it is just to search for it.A bright desktop background requires your display's pixels to light up more, when requires more juice. Choose a dark picture or color by going to Settings > Personalization > Background.Like the display, keyboard backlighting also drains your laptop's battery. Turn them off when they aren't needed. Your laptop likely has a Function key that lets you toggle the keyboard backlights on and off. If not, you'll find a control for it in the Windows Mobility Center.

OK, now here's the new battery tool. Fall Creators Update has made it easier to switch between power modes. Instead of digging into the battery page in settings to switch from high performance to battery saver mode or vice versa, you now can just click or tap the battery icon in the taskbar. You'll be able to move a slider from Best battery life to best performance or a balanced mode in between.Dig into Power & sleep settings by clicking its link in the battery menu from the taskbar (or by going to Settings > System > Power & sleep), and you can shorten the time before the display turns off or your laptop goes into sleep mode when it's running on battery power. The shorter you set these times, the longer your battery will last.

Windows 10's built-in Battery Saver mode activates when your remaining battery dips below 20 percent. It disables email and calendar syncing, push notifications, and apps from running in the background. It should be enabled by default, but check to make sure it is by going to Settings > System > Battery. If you find that Battery Saver doesn't disrupt your regular Windows habits, then you can raise the threshold for when it activates above 20 percent. You can see which apps are using the most battery resources by Settings > System > Battery and click Battery usage by app. The list will show you the percentage of battery your apps have used in the past 6 or 24 hours or the past week. If you find an app that you think it using more than its fair share, click on it and toggle off the switch for Managed by Windows and then make sure the box remains unchecked for Allow app to run background tasks.
